We've already determined that although we're like, total bffers, Tori and I are nothing alike. For all of her girly drinks, I drinks lots 'o beer. For all of her manly outfits, I wear frilly dresses. For all the girls she's made out with, I've made out with boys instead. And, even though I've never seen her room, I guarantee it's not as pink as mine is. Regardless, we're pretty good at sharing Fridays (I'm pretty sure we're the only day that hasn't changed) and we have lots and lots fun when we hang out. Sometimes even wearing pink.
But there is one thing that I can pretty much guarantee that I know way more about than Tori. So have fun learning about the crazy world of...
MAKEUP!

3. What product was first marketed as "baby gays?"
a. Cotton balls
b. Baby wipes
c. Eye shadow applicators
d. Q-Tips
d. Q-tips. They were invented in 1923 by a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang. He started the "Leo Gerstenzang Infant Novelty Company" to sell those cotton swabs. In 1926, he expanded Baby Gays to Q-Tips Baby Gays, and later dropped the Baby Gays part. The Q in Q tip stands for quality.
4. In 1915, a model graced the cover of Harper's Bazaar. Notably, she was not wearing a corset, her skirt was above her ankles (*gasp!*) and the back of her dress was lowwww. But something else was missing...and it set off a major trend. What was missing?
a. A bra
b. A hat pin
c. Underarm hair
d. Stockings
c. She had no armpit hair! The Wilkenson Sword razor blade company figured out that this was way better, and starting preaching that women's underarm hair as unfeminine and unhealthy. Thank god. (Leg hair came later.) Link.
5. What does M.A.C. stand for?
a. Manic Artist Cosmetics
b. Movie Actors Cosmetics
c. Makeup Always Corrects
d. Makeup Art Cosmetics
d. Makeup Art Cosmetics. (haha made you look. I'm not going to bother to link to M.A.C.'s page. They probably play really loud music.)
6. Where did nail polish come from?
a. Italy
b. France
c. China
d. India
c. China. Even though Egyptians stained their nails with henna, the Chinese made actual nail lacquers from gum arabic, beeswax, egg whites and colored powder. The earliest traces of this dates to 3000 BC.
7. In the early 1920s, what did women do to get that fresh, pale look?
a. Caked on pounds of makeup
b. Rubbed their face on the chalk board
c. Never, ever left the house
d. Bled themselves
d. I'm sure they did some of those other things too, but they actually bled themselves with leeches or even by cupping, which meant that they cut a vein and let the blood flow out. GROSS.
8. In the 1400s it was also cool to look like a ghost apparently. Lots of ladies shaved their foreheads, plucked out their eyelashes and their eyebrows and whitened their face with ceruse. What was ceruse?
a. Chalk
b. Leeches
c. Vinegar and powdered lead
d. Cocaine
c. Vinegar and powdered lead, which eventually ate away at their skin, which meant they had to put more layers of the crap on to make them paler. Which made the whole thing worse and eventually killed all those fashionable dames. Despite all this, it was popular for around 300 years. Suddenly I'm O.K. with the leeches. Not really though.
Emily's Trivia Quiz runs Fridays at 9:00 a.m. She's going to homecoming this weekend. Yay!

FYI, Wilkenson was also the first company to market stainless steel blades, causing a lot a people (mostly men) to switch (for awhile) from Gillette or Schick. PS. That Nike ad is great!
