Bees are intriguing creatures. Not only do they make sweet, sweet honey, but they're also one of my favorite animals to visit at the county fair (mostly because they don't smell). Even though I'm not going to write about it, I'm really saddened (slash terrified) because there are bees dying throughout the world. Read the article in the Economist. The reason it scares me, is because Einstien predicted that once the bees start dying, humans have only four years to live. Awesome. Read more about it in this blog that closely follows The Bathtub's style guide. "ZOMG GM foodz!" Meanwhilz, I'd like to write a quiz today purely based on the letter B. Sorry, I can't seem to get off my Muppet kick.
1. The B Line in the New York Subway system goes to and from which two boroughs?
a. The Bronx to Queens
b. Queens to Brooklyn
c. The Bronx to Brooklyn
d. Manhattan to Staten Island
c. Bronx to Brooklyn (obviously it goes from Brooklyn to Bronx as well), through Manhattan. Even more B-tastic, it goes from Brighton Beach, Brooklyn to Bedford Park Boulevard, Bronx! No wonder Sesame Street takes place in New York.
2. This former Secretary-General of the United Nations appeared on Da Ali G Show in 2002 and was also used as an exclamation in an episode of Seinfeld.
a. Dag Hammarskjöld
b. Boutrous Boutrous Ghali
c. Trygve Lie
d. Gladwyn Jebb
b. He was sung about in an Animaniacs song with the lyrics "Boutrous Boutrous Ghali-gee/Down by the East Riverside/Leads the General Assembly." And Myra Monkhouse's full name in Family Matters is "Myra Boutros-Boutros Monkhouse." If you've seen both of these episodes you win!
(Also, I was going to make all my answers start with "B," but the U.N. Secretary Generals have such awesome names, I couldn't help myself, even if it did totally give up the answer.)
3. The cartoon character Betty Boop was famous because...
a. She sang jazzy tunes
b. She was the first mainstream cartoon character to have women's features
c. She danced in a hula skirt
d. No one took away her "boop-oop-a-doop!"
All of the above! But really, she was famous for being one of the first sexy cartoon characters.
4. Which major U.S. retailer refused to sell Plan B contraception to its customers until March of last year?
a. Target
b. CVS
c. KMart
d. Wal-Mart
d. Wal-Mart, but they still allow employees to follow a "conscientious objection policy," which lets employees who don't feel comfortable dispensing a prescription to refer customers to another pharmacist or pharmacy. Which I'm sure happens. Also, I like this blog, because a knitted uterus is an awesome excuse for a guest blog.
5. The following names are notable early examples of what: lark Kent, The Amazing Bobo, James Bond, Harrison and Tom Krew, Sau Sau, Ricksy, and El Dorado Mike...
a. Balloon animal creators
b. Backstreet Boys
c. Bonobos
d. B-boys
d. They are all early B-boys and paved the way for break dancers today! (And that picture is not of them, but of some British B-boys in 1984.)
6. Now for a round of dictionary! The word "banneret" means...
a. A feudal knight entitled to lead men into battle under his own standard and ranking between knight bachelor and baron.
b. A tree of tropical Africa, having a trunk up to 30 feet in diameter, large pendulous white flowers, and hard-shelled, fleshy fruit.
c. An announcement, especially in a church, of an intended marriage.
d. Any of various shrubs of the genus Berberis, having small leaves, clusters of yellow flowers, and small orange or red berries.
a. is the answer, b is the baobab, c is a banns, and d is barberry. Thank you trusty Second College Edition of The American Heritage Dictionary. (1982, Houghton Mifflin, Boston)
7. Oooh I like this game, how's for one more? "Booboisie."
a. A Mahayana Buddhist monk, especially of China, Japan, and adjacent countries.
b. A class of people composed of the stupid and gullible.
c. A person who has refined tastes and especially one who enjoys good food and drink.
d. A woman with large mammary glands.
b. is the correct answer. a. is bonze. c. is bonvivant. d. I made up. And it's apparently a band too. That's their logo above.
