I have a degree in English so I've done a lot of "reading" in my time. But I didn't get my nickname as "A Regurgitation of Pop Culture" by
reading stupid prize winning novels about dirt by some dude named after
a polar bear. In fact the only things I really read are fashion
magazines and celebrity gossip blogs. My main sources of enlightenment
and entertainment is what I see on TV (TV being defined as primetime
network television, E!, Vh1, MTV, Bravo and Comedy Central). This week
was particularly important to my continuing education, as it was spring
sweeps, meaning that many of my favorite shows came to an end for the
season, leaving me either satisfied with a clean resolution to the
season or in suspense for the future implications of the season finale.
Therefore, here is my recap of some of my favorite shows' finales, in
case you missed them. WARNING: If you have not seen the finales of
these shows yet and would still like to catch them on your DVR, this
post may contain some spoilers.
AMERICAN IDOL
What happened this season: American Idol my show of shows, the I-Can't-Wait-to-Get-Home-On-Tuesdays-To-Watch show, the Living-Vicariously-Through-The-Contestants show. This season was full of excellent singers from differing genres, including R&B, soul, pop, rock, country, Sanjaya , and beatboxing. Melinda was a clear frontrunner from the beginning, with her always consistent performances. I found her boring, but that is neither here nor there, because she was voted off the show in third place, just before the finals between Blake and Jordin .
What happened in the finale: Blake, the performer, and Jordin, the singer, battled it out in a major cheese fest, ultimately resting on a song written by amateur contest winners that fit neither of their voices, but way less so for Blake's style. In a close race, but not shockingly, Jordin took the title last night and is destined for a less-than-guaranteed mediocre recording career.
Summer Show that Could Replace the Void in my Routine: So You Think You Can Dance. Same formula, where dancing=singing.
THE OFFICE
What happend this season: My other Can't-Miss, the Office this season was fantastic, with the introduction of some new characters after the merging of the Scranton and Stanford branches of Dunder-Mifflin. Pam broke off her engagement with Roy only to find that Jim is now dating Karen from the Stanford branch. Michael started a relationship with Jan and broke it off toward the end of the season because she made him "do things" in bed. Dwight and Angela kept their relationship a secret. And Ryan "the Temp" was promoted to Sales Representative. Lots of coworker love was had by all.
What happened in the finale: Michael gets back together with Jan after she reveals her new "boob enhancement." Michael goes to interview for a job at corporate, feeling assured that he is a shoe-in for the position and names Dwight as his replacement. Jim and Karen also decide to interview. Pam, who had admitted that she missed Jim and their friendship to the entire office the previous episode, defends what she said. Michael discovers that he is actually interviewing for Jan's position, who corporate intends to fire, Jan goes completely batty, and corporate decides to take the company in a "different direction," meaning Michael does not get the job. Jim possibly realizes he loves Pam during his interview and returns to Scranton without Karen, asking Pam out on a date when he returns. Ryan "the Temp" gets the job at corporate and promptly dumps Kelly.

SCRUBS
What happend this season: A bunch of really funny things, but most importantly, JD was dating a doctor named Kim who accidentily got pregnant. She was from some other city and had to move back, so they continued their long distance relationship until Kim tells JD that she had a miscarriage and they should stop seeing each other. Elliot continues a serious relationship with Keith, they get engaged at the end of the season. Carla and Turk have a baby (or was that last season?) and Dr. Cox and Jordan, to their initial disdain, have their second.
What happened in the finale: JD goes to a medical conference with Turk at which Kim happens to be giving a lecture. They discover that she is indeed still very pregnant with JD's baby and confront her. Elliot has serious doubts about marrying Keith. JD decides to forgive Kim and lets her move in with him. They resume a relationship in preparation for their baby. Both JD and Elliot start seriously freaking out as their respective live-altering events approach. The episode ends with them lying together in a sleep room at the hospital, looking as if they are about to kiss.
Summer Show that Could Replace the Void in my Routine: Scrubs. It's on Comedy Central all the freakin time.
24
What happened this season: The season opened with a nuclear bomb that went off north of LA, some major civil-rights infringements, Jack returning from a Chinese prison where he'd been for 2 years and then biting some guy's neck until he died, stuff with his dad and brother being traders and kidnapping his nephew, some stand-offs with Russians, and an assasination attempt on the President of the United States from within the bunker. And then I stopped watching around episode 6 because it was getting too ridiculous/obvious/it was making me afraid to ride public transportation to work. But I assume the rest of the season had lots of fighting, suspense, Jack screaming "Damnit there's no time!," and many many beep-boops.
What happened in the finale: Like I said, I stopped watching. But I'm sure it had lots of fighting, suspense, Jack screaming "Damnit there's no time!", and slightly less beep-boops than the rest of the season. And then Jack getting in to some situation at the end that requires resolution in the next season. You can read the real recap at Television Without Pity .
Summer Show that Could Replace the Void in my Routine: Summer blockbuster action-movies at the theather/ movies on TNT.
DANCING WITH THE STARS
What happened this season: I don't watch this show that regularly, mainly because I just barely squeak by my girly, talent-based, reality show quota with my male roommates. But also because I can't seem to understand why some very accomplished professionals in varying fields choose to associate themselves with a bunch of wash-up D-listers on a ballroom dancing show. I actually witness Emitt Smith say that he didn't care that he was the all-time NFL leading rusher, that he was a Dancing With the Stars champion now and that's who he is. Seriouxbeez.
What happened in the finale: Olympic speed-skater Apollo Ohno won, beating out Leila Ali (daughter of Muhammed Ali), and ex-N'Sync member Joey Fatone. For opinion on the matter, see comments above.
Summer Show that Could Replace the Void in my Routine: America's Got Talent (because I will only watch it just as much as I actually watched DWTS)
In sum, it's been a great season for some of my favorite shows and I can't wait until they start up again so I can have a reason again to not go to the gym or do any of my household chores. When does Project Runway start again?
Other Shows that could fill your void:
Top Chef
Iron Chef America (better that regular Iron Chef Japan because the secret ingredient isn't always eel guts)
The Closer? I love law and order and TNT but I haven't had the energy to try and get into this show bc Kyra Seddgewick seems kind of annoying. If you want to watch it, tell me if it's good, and then get back to me that'd be great kthxbai
